The late filter design doesn’t trap particles quite as small as the inline design did. The later-design filter incorporates the same features as the early sump filter and inline filter, in that it passes a percentage of fluid through the finer-micron filter, but is all packed into one filter in the transmission pan. This problem is further agitated by the addition of larger tires, aftermarket. It is also a well know fact that the intermediate shaft on these will fracture and sheer completely causing catastrophic failure within the unit. The new-design sump filter eliminated the need for the inline filter in the later vehicles. The Ford 5R110 transmission has been known to strip the splines out on the intermediate shaft in even stock applications. Ford specifies that the fluid, pan filter, and external filter on the TorqShift transmsision be replaced at 30,000 miles. This change also required a change to the transmission-fluid pan ( Figure 5). What we recommend is to bypass the inline filter element and canister to flush the cooler, or use a spare clean filter element during the flush and install a new filter element after the flush. 2011present 6R140 - 6-speed automatic with Tow/Haul mode - Replaces 5R110W in Super Duty trucks. It is important to understand that you cannot flush the cooler and cooler lines with the filter element removed the fluid would just bypass the cooler altogether. The transmission, of course, also has the 60-micron filter in the sump. About 10% of the fluid flowing to the transmission cooler passes through the inline filter element, which is a much-finer 5-micron element for better filtering over time.
